Romsey Airfield

Where Flying History Lives On

neale at romsey

Tucked quietly into the landscape and long known by local pilots as a kind of “Shangri-La of the North,” Romsey Airfield has always been more than coordinates on a map. For decades, its exact location was shared mostly by word of mouth, discovered only by those skilled enough to navigate the rolling green hills and farmland of the Kilmore Gap. Those who arrived found something rare: a grass-runway airfield with character, charm, and a fiercely loyal aviation community.

The early days of Romsey were shaped by aviators who saw value in simplicity - a place where flying came first, the clubhouse held stories in every corner, and the runways welcomed everything from light touring aircraft to curious visiting pilots. The original hangars, rustic and practical, stood beside a clubhouse that quietly chronicled years of flying adventures, scribbled notes, and shared memories.

Today, Romsey Airfield remains true to that spirit. Multiple hangars, generous grass runways, and a warm, tight-knit community form the backbone of a location that has long valued accessibility, independence, and a love of flying.

Although the airfield has gotten older, the essence hasn’t changed: Romsey is still a place where aircraft are cared for, stories are swapped over a cup of tea, and flying feels as authentic as it did decades ago.

Romsey Airfield continues to welcome general aviation enthusiasts from across Victoria - a place hidden in plain sight, rich with history, and proudly committed to keeping country aviation alive.
